Jordan's Miss Texas Week Recap

The week of the Miss Texas Pageant came and went so quickly. After months and months of preparations, alterations and hard work I went into the week of the pageant more confident than ever before. I always love getting to see and spend time with my pageant sisters. Also, because Miss Texas celebrated its 75th anniversary this year many of the former Miss Texas’ that I have looked up to and admired for so long were at the pageant participating in the festivities. I got to talk to many of them including Lisa Dalzell Spooner, Carly Jarmon Gil, Molly Simmons, Tara Watson Watkins, Morgan Matlock Hightower, to name a few and it was such a special experience that I will forever cherish.

I feel so blessed to share this year with my precious teen Lydia. It has been so special for me to get to be a part of her TREMENDOUS growth this year. Lydia, I am so incredibly proud of you. I love you so much!

Two moments stick out to me the most during the pageant week. The first moment came on Tuesday night following my evening gown and swimsuit competition when I was announced the preliminary swimsuit winner. For many years I have watched girls receive the prelim awards and have stood in awe of them. I was always just hoping that one day my name would be called to receive one of these awards. It was so special to be recognized for all of the hard work and dedication I put in to getting in shape this year. To me, this is truly one of the most precious awards I could have received because I set my mind to earning this honor and I accomplished it.

The second moment that stands out in my mind came on finals night. Not only was it such an honor to be called into the top 10 at the pageant but I also got to share the stage with my little sister, Reilly, and of course my best friend and roommate Ashley. Later in the evening when the top 10 was narrowed to 5 and my name was called there was no better feeling than the world than looking out at my family, pageant family, and friends cheering loudly for me and then running to my best friend, also in the top five, for a big hug (and maybe some tears of joy!). Ashley and I kept having to tell one another to “pull it together” and stop sobbing.

Later in the evening Ashley and I stood holding hands in a moment that seemed to last forever and finally Gloria announced that I was the first runner up and that my best friend was the new Miss Texas. Words cannot express how incredibly proud I am of her! All I remember is crying tears of joy as she walked down the runway thinking how excited/proud/happy for her I was… and then realizing I have no roommate for the upcoming semester!!!

I had such a great time during the Miss Texas pageant this year and made many memories that will last a lifetime. There is no way I could have accomplished all I have this year without a very special group of people and I want to take a moment to thank them for investing time, money, and love in me.

First off, my amazing family! Thank you Mom, Dad and Rei for always believing in me and supporting me in all ways possible. I love you all the way to Pluto and back!

My bestie, Ashley - No way I could have done this without you! It has been so incredible to share this journey with you!

Lyds - You are the best teen in the world. God truly blessed me this year by bringing you into my life. I am here for you forever and always… I love you dearly!

Alex and Chris - my secret parents. Words cannot express how much I love you two! You have helped me grow in so many ways the past two years and I know we will be friends forever.

Larkin- thank you for ALWAYS believing in me and helping me to achieve my fitness goals. I love you dearly and treasure our friendship.

Lisa - You are a BLESSING in my life. Not only have you helped me build so much confidence in my interview, you have made me believe that I can be Miss Texas. You are such an incredible friend and role model. I am so lucky to have you in my life.

The Dalzells- Thank you for helping me with my interview. Your mocks made me feel so prepared! I love you guys!

Ashley and Jennifer Lenz - Thank you for making me feel like a million bucks in my dress (which is just a little less than in cost right?! Haha just kidding!) P 90X is amazing… I love you both tons!

Micaela - You made my week INCREDIBLE! I have never felt so beautiful and put together in my life. I don’t know how you made my hair look so wonderful but I thank you from the bottom of my heart not only for your incredible hair and makeup skills but for your friendship and support and for always making me smile!

Stephen Yearick - My tap costume and interview dress were AMAZING! I had so much fun in New York with you and I look forward to working together again.

Shea Sullivan - Thank you for choreographing my tap dance to Instant Replay - I love performing. You are the best! I had a blast with you this year!

BeautiControl - You are the most incredible support team EVER. God has truly blessed me this year by bringing all of you into my life. I can’t wait to see what next year brings!

On Saturday May 1st, after 2 days of non-stop studying for my final exams, I took a break for the evening to attend Irving Healthcare Foundation’s TexasFest Gala. It was held at Eddie Dean’s Ranch in Dallas.

When Alex and I arrived we were greeted by a lady who had actually lived in Irving her whole life and competed for the title of Miss Irving many year ago! She was very excited to meet me and tell me about her experiences with pageants. We then proceeded to the silent auction where I was giving a computer that looked more like a small flat screen television. Someone briefed me about the machine and sent me on my way. The computer was pretty neat in that it kept track of all of the live auction bids and you could actually bid from the computer. There were pictures and descriptions of each item as well. Each attendee was given a “bidding card” and they could scan the card to check the status of their current bids. The only downside to this machine was that it was rather fickle and also that my arm got quiet a workout after carrying it around all night.

I think I played more with the computer trying to make it work than I actually got people to bid but I did get to talk to a great deal of people who were actually from Irving which was neat for me. They enjoyed hearing about my year as Miss Irving and about my upcoming competition in July. They all wished me luck and it felt good to know that the city of Irving supports me as I vie for the title of Miss Texas this summer! Diamond Rio also played a concert later in the evening, however, Alex and I left when the auction closed and made the long trek back down I-30 towards Fort Worth.

Toast To Life Gala

The Toast To Life Gala, held at Fashion Industry Gallery in Downtown Dallas was an event attended by over 800 people. Since it began in 1999, this event has raised over $2,100,000. Many of Dallas’ most prominent chefs showed up to cook up their “latest culinary creations” .

Additionally there was a huge silent auction as well as a live auction at the end of the evening. All of the proceeds went to benefit the Resource Center Dallas. RCD provides critical assistance to individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. They serve 12 counties across North Texas and provide services. They also offer many community programs including:

Health Insurance Premium and Co-Pay Assistance, Oral Health Care, Nutrition Programs, an HIV/AIDS Helpline, treatment education, and other services designed to empower and support community members living with HIV/AIDS. I sold raffle tickets for a trip for two to New York City and I had a great time talking to the attendees about my platform as well as the Miss Texas Pageant this July and all that I will have to do to prepare.

Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS - Passion 4 Fashion

The Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS is a non- profit organization based in North Texas that proudly supports AIDS Outreach Center of Tarrant County, Aids Services of Dallas and Resource Center Dallas. Each of these organizations are dedicated to providing life-saving and life-enhancing services to the thousands of people in North Texas who are living with HIV/AIDS. The Passion 4 Fashion event was held in Dallas’ Rose Room and was a fundraising event.

When I arrived I was whisked backstage into a dressing room full of models and given a gown to try on. Thankfully the first one I tried on worked and I was then taken to have my hair and make up done. The hair and make-up artists were so kind and it was a treat for me because I had no idea I was going to be getting all dolled up. Who doesn’t love getting their hair and make up done! After getting my hair curled and my make up fixed, I put on my sparkily silver Sue Wong cocktail dress, compliments of Saks Fifth Avenue, and made my way to the VIP lounge where I visited with the VIP attendees and sold raffle tickets.

People were so excited to meet “The REAL Miss Irving” (apparently there are a few imposters running around the DFW area! Haha). I hope to get further involved with their upcoming Lone Star Bike Ride. I really enjoyed this event and had a lot of fun getting involved with this great organization… and I didn’t mind wearing a designer cocktail dress for the night either!

Child Abuse Awareness Month

Hello all! I hope you have been great! As for me, I have been a very busy girl the month of April because April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. Texarkana has had so many fundraisers and events to raise awareness which I helped out with. On Saturday April 3, I worked all day in the Rainbow Room organizing and sorting clothes. The Rainbow Room is an onsite emergency room containing new donated items. It serves the basic emergency needs of children and families through the Child Protective Services office. The room supplies social workers with any kind of materials needed for a case. It is commonly referred to as a Wal-Mart for case workers. The room contains everything from clothes to toys to cleaning supplies to baby cribs. Only new items are accepted as donations because abused children do not need abused things. All children want new trendy clothes. It was so humbling to see all the clothes and supplies and think of all the children in my hometown who will use these items.

In fact, I was inspired to organize a “Spring Cleaning Supplies drive“. My high school and a local elementary school are collecting house hold cleaning products such as laundry detergent, Clorox wipes, sponges, buckets, and mops and brooms. These are needed items to help children have a clean home to live in. If you are interested in donating please contact me at lidbid11@aim.com

On April 7, 2010 Texarkana declared Go Blue Day! At school I passed out blue ribbons to my friends and classmates to wear all day. We had several questions asked and many opportunities arose for us to raise awareness. Not only did I raise awareness in my school, but there was a huge fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery where 25% of the proceeds were donated to CASA (Court Appointed Social Advocates). We released a hundred royal blue balloons into the sky in honor of the bruised and battered bodies of abused children. After watching the balloons disappear, my beautiful Lone Star Princess Allie and I enjoyed a giant bowl of chocolate chocolate chip ice-cream!!! It was to die for! I also signed pictures to all the children who came in supporting the fundraiser while Allie passed out blue ribbons. We had so much fun! A local radio station even came out and interviewed me. I had never been on the radio before. There were so many people and I was able to meet a local judge and several case workers who shared with me stories they have experienced with their job. Getting to sit down and talk with them was probably my favorite part of the day. As you can see it was such an exciting day, but more importantly it was a very successful fundraiser!

On Saturday, April 24, 2010 some of my Texas Highstepper sisters and I volunteered at a softball tournament benefiting Child Protective Services and the Rainbow Room. We worked in the drink trailer selling drinks, face painted and worked the jumping booths. I’m not a very good painter, but the kids seemed to love my designs, or maybe it was because they couldn’t see them! The weather was beautiful and I was able to talk to a lot of people about my platform, as well as sign autograph pictures. I only worked 7 hours, but the tournament went way into the night.

This Tuesday evening, April 27th is an event called “Ladies Night Out”. Different businesses in town will be set up to pamper the ladies who attend. All proceeds go to benefit CASA and Child Protective Services. I don’t know what all I will be doing, rest assured I will blog about it!

On Saturday March 27th Lydia and I started our day off early by attending Tarrant County food bank's Breakfast with the Stars event! I can truly say I felt like a queen all morning long... and not only because I was in an evening gown and crown at 8 in the morning haha! The event was for children and they had tons of fun activities sponsored by local businesses for the kids to do. For example, there was coloring, decorating, instrument playing, picture books, and science experiments just to name a few. Some of the "stars" in attendance included Cinderella, TCU's Super Frog and some basketball players, little red riding hood, the Easter bunny, buddy the bear, and Fort Worth Firefighters. The event helped to raise money for the food bank and we got to see first hand the three menu options they had for children. It was so special that so many families came out to support this event. I loved meeting all of the children and I was so touched when they kept coming up and randomly hugging me and wanting to visit with me. They wanted Lydia and I to remember each and every single one of their names, which was difficult considering that we met at least 60 kiddos. I received numerous compliments that morning from parents about how much they appreciated Lydia and I taking time to talk to their child and make them feel special. They said that they children just couldn't get enough of the "real life Princesses". To me, that is what the job of Miss Irving, Miss Texas, and Miss America is all about. It's about reaching out to those children and helping put a smile on their face and making them feel special. I brought 100 autograph sheets for this event and I think I maybe had 10 left by the end of the morning. I had an absolutely incredible time at this event and I hope I can be a part of the Tarrant County Food Bank's events in the future!

After the event we all headed over to my apartment to change so we could grab some lunch and then head out for a little interview dress shopping! No luck finding either of us the perfect interview dress, but we sure had a great time looking and trying on clothes!

After signing autographs all morning and shopping all afternoon, Lydia and I got dressed up in our black dresses and cheetah print heels and headed to the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas for the No Tie Dinner and Dessert Party. Little did we know that when we arrived we would be walking into a room full of...you guessed it... desserts!!! Talk about resisting temptation... Lydia and I started off the evening by serving gourmet cupcakes to the guests and chatting with them. Just as soon as we were getting settled in our seats, a group of four wide-eyed teens approached us and asked us if they could interview us for a project they were doing for high school. Of course we said yes! They asked us if we had been to an event like this before. I replied that no, I had never been to this particular event but that I had volunteered at many AIDS events in the DFW area. They asked us why we were there and I got to talk about my platform. They also asked us why we felt the event was important and so once again I talked about my platform and about how incredibly vital it is that we as a community come together to provide assistance to the families and individuals in our area who suffer from AIDS. I had several people come up to me that were from Irving and I got to explain how I earned my crown and that I would be competing for the title of Miss Texas this summer. They were very intrigued! All in all it was a great night and although I really wished I could have gone around and sampled all of the desserts I know that come July, when I am on stage in my bikini, it will be well worth the sacrifice!

Starfish Society: Encouraging Community Support for HIV/AIDS Impacted Families

The Starfish Society’s goal is to educate and to serve knowing that one person and one act of love makes a very big difference!

The Starfish Society teaches children and young adults that their actions and decisions are important and have consequences. Using story telling and role playing, elementary school aged children are encouraged to analyze the pros and cons of drug and alcohol use. In this context, these children are informed that HIV/AIDS is a fatal disease that is often contracted as a result of drug abuse. Since HIV/AIDS is the world’s number one killer of young adults, it is imperative to begin a campaign to prevent the spread of this disease at a very early age.

During middle school and high school, the threat of becoming infected with HIV/AIDS intensifies. The Starfish Society provides a straightforward and honest peer mentoring program in which teens openly discuss this issue and develop strategies to assist one another in resisting drug use and unprotected sexual activities.

At each level, The Starfish Society encourages students and their parents to embrace those who are already impacted by HIV/AIDS and to do “little things” to help. To that end, elementary school children collect “Pennies With A Purpose” and donate the money to Children's Miracle Network and AIDS-based organizations along with handwritten notes of encouragement. Older students raise funds to sponsor a child with HIV/AIDS for a week at Camp Dreamcatcher, a camp especially designed for infected children. Students serve as camp counselors or organize book drives for children hospitalized with HIV/AIDS. Families donate clothing, food, love and attention to those in need.

DIFFA 2010 Silent Auction Soirée

I had the opportunity at attend the DIFFA Dallas Silent Auction Soirée event on Feb. 3, 2010. It was fun to see all of the incredible items up for bid. There was everything there from pillows to restaurant packages to intricately designed capes to designer dog houses! There were so many people who came out for the event and I was honored that I got to be a part of it.

Ashley Melnick, Miss Fort Worth, and I were interviewed by a local news station which was a cool experience. The broadcaster asked me about being Miss Irving and how I got into doing pageants. I replied that I entered my first pageant on a whim and incidentally broke my foot during my talent rehearsal the day of the pageant, but nonetheless I was hooked and I have been competing ever since. She also asked me what I do as Miss Irving and I told her that I get to travel to schools and organizations speaking on my platform which is AIDS awareness and providing support for HIV/AIDS impacted families as well as appearing at events. I also have the opportunity to compete for the title of Miss Texas this summer. It was funny because she kept thinking my name was "Julie Jordan" for some reason. I think she finally got it right on the broadcast though!

DIFFA Silent Auction Soirée was a great event and I had a blast. Thanks to Bobbie Crowder for allowing me to be a part of this event!

Miss America 2010

I was so lucky to be able to attend two nights of preliminary competition and the finals of Miss American 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kristen Blair did an amazing job representing Texas. Kristen and I were in the same group this year at Miss Texas so I got to spend some time getting to know her. She truly is an inspiration to me. Kristen has the ability to make you feel so special because she really does care. She has a heart the size of Texas and is just an incredibly warm and outgoing person.

After seeing Kristen at her wardrobe show I really thought she was going to be Miss America. Her wardrobe was phenomenal! It was so obvious to me that Kristen had worked so incredibly hard and that both her head and her heart were in the right place. Although I was bummed when she didn't win, she did make the top 10 which is an absolutely incredible accomplishment. i don't think I have ever cheered so loud in my entire life! Kristen looking absolutely stunning in all phases of competition and I hope she is as proud of herself as we all are. Although I am biased and I think she should have won, I am still excited that Kristen gets to stay our Miss Texas because I know she has such a powerful message and she will be able to touch the hearts of so many children.

Getting to watch the contestants compete in prelims motivated me and made me realize that my goals to be Miss Texas and Miss America are attainable. It will take a lot of hard work and dedication but I am ready to put in that work and hopefully it will all pay off! I had an incredible time in Las Vegas and I am so excited to see what the future holds! Congratulations to Caressa Cameron, Miss America 2010!

Hello everyone! My name is Lydia Knight and I am Miss Teen Irving 2010. I am so excited about my year! In the past two months I have had a photo shoot, been to other prelims as a visiting titleholder, ridden in a parade, and had a Christmas party with my Lone Star Princesses and fantastic board members! It has already been so much fun, and I cannot wait to see what the rest of my year holds.

During this holiday season, I realized how truly blessed I am! I have a family who loves me dearly, a home, a cozy bed, and an abundant supply of food in the pantry. I felt that I should give back to my community the best I could. At Thanksgiving I teamed up with a local elementary school and helped with their canned food drive. It was so much fun to encourage little kids to bring food for the less fortunate in their community. You should have seen them when I asked what their favorite Thanksgiving food was and then told them some children their age wouldn’t be having a Thanksgiving feast. Red Lick Elementary School helped so many families have a nice Thanksgiving Day feast, and I am honored to have been a part of it.

I knew I wanted to continue helping the people have a good holiday season, so as Junior Class Vice President I organized a sock tree for my high school along with a fellow classmate’s help. We set up a Christmas tree and encouraged students to fill the tree with hats and socks and gloves and scarves which we would donate to local shelters around town. In a few days I came to school and my tree was filled! I was amazed by the generous spirit my fellow schoolmates had.

I had a very relaxing holiday season. I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed the first day of my break. That wasn’t very fun because I could barely eat all the delicious food we had for Christmas. I enjoyed being able to spend quality time with my family watching my favorite Christmas movies every night! We made sugar cookies and these amazing chocolate Oreo cookie balls! They were to die for! My favorite part about Christmas is spending time with my family reminiscing on past Christmas memories. If I had to choose my favorite part about this Christmas would be that it snowed for the first time in six years, and it was on Christmas Eve!! It wasn’t much snow and it didn’t stick, but it was enough to make everyone smile.

As the new year of 2010 begins, I become more and more excited. I am excited about Teen Texas this summer and excited to be the best Miss Teen Irving I can be! I am proud to represent such a great city and blessed to have such supportive directors.

The holidays are a special time of year when so many reach out into the community and do small acts of kindness to help others. People help in many ways including donating money to a charity, spending time serving food to homeless at a food kitchen, donating items to a food pantry, or buying a toy for a boy or girl who would otherwise not receive a gift. I believe that it is these acts of kindness and selflessness which characterize Christmas and that makes it my absolute favorite time of year.

After Christmas, people go on to make resolutions as they commence the new year. In the past my resolutions have included sticking to a diet, exercising daily, cutting out soda, etc. but this year in addition to my usual resolutions I am taking on a much larger task. This year, I have resolved to make Christmas last all year. No, I do not mean that each of the upcoming 365 days will be filled with actual presents (unfortunately! haha) what I mean is that I want to continue the giving and loving spirit of Christmastime all year long.

The love you give to another by helping them is the bet gift you can possibly give and there is no day better than today to give it. My platform is about the little things each of us can do to help ease the burden of AIDS on families that are impacted by this disease. Holiday Greetings From Miss Irving

Happy Holidays! My name is Jordan Johannsen and I am so excited to be Miss Irving 2010! I am a 21 year old student at Texas Christian University where I am majoring in Business. I am so excited about serving as Miss Irving 2010 and can't wait to see what the year brings!

The first weekend in December, I had the opportunity to be in the City of Irving Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting. Despite the cold winter weather, many people came out to show support and to see the incredible floats in the parade. A HUGE Thank You so much to Grapevine Ford for allowing us to borrow a beautiful convertible for the afternoon.

Lydia ( Miss Teen Irving) came into town for the parade as did all four of our princesses. This was the first time all 6 of us have been able to get together and we have the best time getting to know each other! We spent the afternoon sharing laughs and talking about what we hoped to get from Santa while enjoying hot chocolate and of course riding in the parade.

We also all got announced at the tree lighting ceremony for all of the toys and food we collected for the City of Irving's Blue Christmas food and toy drive! We only had a week to collect things and I was so impressed how much we collected between the 6 of us! Hopefully we are able to help put a smile on several kids and parents faces this holiday season!

But the day wasn't done yet! After the parade and tree lighting ceremony we headed to the Magic Time Machine in Addison for the Miss Irving Holiday Party! Several of the board members, as well as family came to join in on all the fun! Lydia, the princesses and I got to be seated in a really cool tree house and had dinner served by Dennis the Menace! I was feeling brave enough to try one of the "special potion" drinks that came in all sorts of colors! Mine was bright red and bubbled! Lydia, was daring enough to try the one the called "Ugly" and was black and bubbly! After dinner we all exchanged gifts with each other and finished the night off with an ice cream treat! Needless to say it was a great way to top off a fun day!

I had such a great time hanging out with all of my awesome princesses, Lydia and of course the entire Irving board. Thanks to everyone who helped to make this event a great success. At this time of year I am especially thankful for my wonderful pageant family. Merry Christmas to all! May your holidays be filled with lots of laughter, love and family!

Over the last few weeks we have been hard at work on securing our date, sponsorships and growing our prize packages! Also our new website has gone up http://www.missirving.com/!

This year we are going to hold our pageant with the Miss East Texas Organization on November 8, 2009 at Plaza Theatre in Garland. While we are still working out few details of the theme, we can tell THIS IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN!!!!!! So ladies, mark your calenders!!!!

We do want to give a HUGE thank you to our board as well: Shannon Caldwell, Amy Chambers, Sam Chambers and Jenny Crabtree! They have already secured some really great prizes and sponsorships, but they aren't stopping there! The new Miss and Miss Teen Irving are going to be very lucky young ladies!

Alex and I had a great year learning the ropes as the directors of Miss Ellis County, but it is time for us to step out on our own. We are very excited to announce that we will be taking on a new local - Miss and Miss Teen Irving!

Many of you know that we struggled with finding "just the right" title, especially since there are already several in the Metroplex. The one day on facebook Peter Blair (Miss Texas, Kristen Blair's Dad) suggested, "What about Miss Irving?"

At first Alex was not too keen on the idea, she is a Fort Worth girl and one way or another she was going to come up with a title that tied in where we both have been born and raised! But for me this was a great idea, that I am not sure why I never thought of!!!

My Great, Great Uncle, J.O. Schulze, was actually one of the two founding fathers of the town of Irving back in 1903. (Irving wasn't officially incorporated until April 14, 1914.) When my Aunt Catherine passed away a few years back, many of the family heirlooms were donated to the Heritage House Museum in Irving. Alex is having a great time learning more about my families past and the development of Irving!
